When Russia launched a full-scale invasion of neighboring Ukraine in February, most onlookers in the United States reacted with horror and revulsion. They also expressed confusion: Why was the war happening? This talk will argue that the instigator of the attack on Ukraine, Vladimir Putin, has taken a firm stance on a philosophical question that has bedeviled Russians for centuries, namely what their country's role in the world -its historical destiny- should be. 

Dr. Matthew Slaboch is an assistant professor in the School of Civic and Economic Thought and Leadership at Arizona State University. Previously he served as a visiting assistant professor at Denison University and a postdoctoral research fellow at Princeton University.
